This will be the second series between the Dodgers in Cubs within the last week. The Cubs took two of three games from the previous series last week in Chicago. Following that series, the Cubs and Dodgers went completely opposite ways. Being known as the hottest team in the month of June, the Dodgers went on to sweep the struggling Mets over the weekend. On the other side, the Cubs struggled and got swept against a hot Cincinnati Reds team.
While in Cincinnati, the Chicago pitching staff allowed at least six or more runs in each of the four games over the weekend. In the series finale on Sunday afternoon, the Cubs had all but won and avoided the sweep. Holding down a commanding 7-1 lead in the bottom of the 7th, the Reds begin to fight and never look back. Eight straight Reds’ reach base and put up a seven spot in the home half of the 7th to take the lead. The inning included 4 singles, 2 doubles, one home run, and 3 walks. The blown save belongs to Strop, who allowed 4 earned runs in less than an inning along side 3 walks.
In New York, the Dodgers pitching allowed a measly two runs on Friday night and only three runs on Saturday. As we all know, Sunday afternoon’s series finale was quite the slug fest. A total of nine home runs between both the Dodgers and Mets. The Dodgers won this home run derby, slugging seven home runs, including two from Kiké Herndandez, two from Bellinger, and of course Turner’s go ahead solo shot in the 11th inning.
Tonight’s pitching matchup will be Kenta Maeda vs. Duane Underwood. Kenta Maeda is sitting at a 4-4 record with a solid 3.84 ERA. Maeda’s previous start, against the Cubs, was limited. Allowing 3 ER on 5 hits in just 3 2/3 innings, Maeda’s control wasn’t all there. He allowed 5 walks in the short stint. Kenta Maeda hopes to have a strong outing and better outcome this time against this resilient Chicago lineup.
Due to a late Tyler Chatwood scratch, 23 year-old Duane Underwood will make his Major League debut tonight in Los Angeles. He will face one of the hottest teams in the month of June in this power-ridden Dodgers lineup. Underwood was the Cubs 2012 second round pick. He stands at 6’2 weighing in at about 210 pounds. In just 14 games in AAA this year, Underwood has allowed 34 runs in 71 2/3 innings. All eyes will be on Underwood tonight as the Cubs hope to get back on track against this streaking Los Angeles team.
